Who needs mobile mechanic insurance?
If you’re working as a mobile mechanic, either on a self-employed or employed basis, then you’d be wise to have mobile mechanic insurance in place. If you plan to drive customers’ vehicles on the road, you will need a road risk policy. Typically, the following professionals take out a policy:
- People who service or repair vehicles on a call-out basis
- Mechanics who offer roadside repairs
- Mechanics who offer mobile tyre, windscreen, or exhaust services
- Mechanics who offer call-out services but also work from their own premises
- Full-time mobile mechanics
- Part-time mobile mechanics
What can mobile mechanic insurance cover?
Your policy needs will depend on the work you are carrying out and if you have employees or premises. At Jensten Insurance Brokers, we tailor our mobile motor trade insurance quotes to the needs of our clients and can offer you the following:
- Road risks insurance – so you can drive customers’ vehicles in your custody and control plus any vehicles you own in connection with your business on public roads. There will be indemnity limits on this, and vehicles such as Japanese imports, classic, or prestige cars may be excluded. As with car insurance, you can choose from third-party, third-party fire and theft, or comprehensive cover
- Tools in transit – which protects things like tools and mobile testing equipment from loss, damage, or theft while they are being moved – an ideal cover for mobile mechanics
- Public liability insurance – if a member of the public is injured or their property damaged, you can be held liable. Public liability insurance will protect you financially should you be sued for damages
- Employers’ liability insurance (EL insurance) – is a legal requirement if you have any staff, be they full-time, part-time, or contracted. EL insurance protects you from compensation claims from your employees should a claim be made against you for loss or injury at work. Your policy must have a minimum of £5m cover, with £10m being the industry standard
- Commercial vehicle insurance – for your van. As a mobile mechanic, it is important that your vehicle is protected should something happen to it
- Tools and machinery cover – without your tools and machinery, you can’t operate and things like jack stands, compressors and powered impact wrenches aren’t cheap to replace. These are items that are attractive to thieves due to their portability and high value. With tool thefts on the rise in the UK*, you’d be wise to insure them. Most policies will require your tools to be left somewhere secure between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and not left in your van at the side of the road. Most policies will also have a limit of between £2,500 and £5,000 per tool.
- Service indemnity insurance – also known as defective workmanship insurance, protects you against claims for faulty parts or for accidentally fitting parts incorrectly
- Products liability insurance – if a product you use or recommend causes damage or harm, you can be liable for compensation should action be brought against you
- Motor legal expenses– if you’re ever sued by a customer or a member of the public, the legal fees could be eye-watering, and motor legal expenses will cover these for you within agreed limits

How much does mobile mechanic insurance cost?
As we’ll create your cover around you, that’s not an easy question to answer. What we can say is that your mobile mechanic insurance quote will be based on factors such as:
- The postcode(s) in which you’re working
- If you have premises
- How long you’ve been trading
- The value of your stock
- The value of your equipment
- Whether you need road risk cover, for how many people and their ages – people under 25 will cost you more to insure
- The turnover of your business
- Your claims history
- Whether you want to pay monthly or annually – annually will usually be cheaper

While these policies may look the same, road risks only covers driving vehicles on the road. Traders combined insurance, on the other hand, can offer a much wider range of essential protections, such as premises, material damage cover and liabilities, amongst others.
That will depend on things like the size of your business, the postcode(s) you’re working in, your claims history – a history of claims and accidents may increase your premium, the value of your equipment and tools, and whether you need road risk cover. The age of the drivers you need cover for will also have a bearing on the cost of your policy, with younger drivers being more expensive to insure. Depending on how secure (or otherwise) your vehicles and tools are will also influence your premiums.
